Treating a Low....Day 2 of Diabetes blogging week

Treating a low differs depending on the time of day or night and the severity of the low and of course what Cara is in the mood for.  She is a very stubborn little 4 year old and she knows what she wants, especially when she is low, the stubbornness is 10x's her "normal".

But I have a secret weapon, during a day time low I have handi snacks! She loves them and NEVER (as of yet) has argued when it is time to have a handi snack (14-16 grams of carbs depending on the brand you get).  They also come in peanut butter, but don't tell Cara that because Kirstin (Cara's baby sister) has a peanut allergy so we are stuck with cheese or should I say CHEEZ (whatever that is)!!

Of course night time lows are a little more tricky, it is a fight most of the time with Cara NEVER wanting anything, but to go back to sleep....who can blame her.  Can you imagine being woken up from a dead sleep and force to eat or drink something?  No thank you!!

So night time lows we usually go for juice drinks that have straws, because that is the easiest way to get something in a sleeping, crying, flailing, 4 year old's mouth.  We also fall back on apple sauce or yogurt and only vanilla yogurt, Cara does not like any other flavor!  These work great because she does not have to chew :)

I like secret weapons! We do a lot of cracker type things too. It makes me feel like we have some healthy options in the arsenal and not just hard core sugar (even though it all turns into sugar anyway).

I can't imagine being woken up from a deep sleep and forced to eat. I feel for our little kiddos. And I personally love CHEEZ. :)

Ditto on the waking them up...I cannot get Joe up for the life of me (well or for the life of him)...luckily he will chew glucose tabs in his sleep.

Awesome post - Missed you!
