Uneducated Deja Vu On GMA

When will it stop?

On Monday night Village on a Diet aired one of the most frustrating misconceptions about type 1 diabetes when a teacher was concerned her class was going to develop "Juvenile diabetes" because of their bad eating habits and lack of exercise.
Read my blog post HERE

Then on Tuesday night Village on a Diet and CBC stepped up after receiving emails, phone calls and live chat comments from concerned T1's and family members about the teachers comments.
Read my blog post HER

and now Wednesday morning and facebook is all a buzz with more uneducated, misleading comments made by Ricki Lake stating "Juvenile diabetes" is preventable on Good Morning America.

Here is the link to view GMA and Ricki Lakes comment

My letter which unfortunately I only had to change a few lines from the letter that I sent Village on a Diet and CBC has been sent to GMA and I started a discussion page on Ricki Lakes new books facebook page HERE

When will it end? but a even better question is...

what's up with everyone that is misspeaking about type 1 diabetes using the term Juvenile diabetes?   maybe that's why it is an "old and out dated term"

and an update on this topic **  I just thought it was far to post a LINK HERE to Ricki Lakes correction on diabetes** and maybe a little later I will have a blog about my thoughts on her "correction".

Really, this is such a ridiculous shame. Why would she say such a thing? Is she, as a person having been overweight, likely dealt with risks of type 2 diabetes, and presenting herself as an authority on the topic, really not aware of what type 1 and type 2 diabetes are? This saddens me.

I know the phone lines at GMA are burning up and producers are looking into the matter. Hopefully we get some sort of result. Ricki Lakes ears should be burning too by now.

These misconceptions put out there by prominent people frustrate me more than anything! Way to show their ignorance.

People's ignorance is so disgusting. I get it at work all the time. I realize it is not a "war" with T2 Diabetics, but I get sick of people telling me if I go on a diet, or try some new berry juice it will go away. Seriously?

I love your passion, Nicole! Thank you for letting our children's voices be heard. I wish like crazy I had the time and energy right now to join in, but Elise and Mattias seem to have conspired to make me crazy these past few days!

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the heads up on this! The GMA website has posted a "correction"...but like you I sent a letter requesting (demanding!) that they do a FULL, factual, segment regarding Type 1 and Type 2. Keep up the good work!

I see she just replied with an apology on your facebook discussion. To me, it appears to be the bare minimum of an apology that she could possibly make. It's nice that she responded so timely, but the content is lacking in my opinion.

thank you everyone for advocating for our t1's and or yourselves. I did see the apology EVERYWHERE that people are commenting about the GMA comment and agree with Lorraine bare minimum. I wonder if she wrote it herself?? I will add a little update on my post about this very little apology...soon!

I hope that something is said in her tv interviews tonight?
