Dear Mr. Elevator Man

I was on my way to the lobby, after a wonderful night out with my girls when you entered the elevator.

You, just an average looking young business man with a suit case.

I did not even give you a second look.

That is until you turned your back and I saw your Medtronic pump hooked on your belt.

And at that very second you started to shine like a T1 beacon you were to me.

I wanted to say something to you, for some reason I wanted to make that connection.

So I quickly went through a few of my options (in my head of course) of what clever (not crazy) thing I could say to you...

"Hey nice pump!!"...no that's dumb!!

"So when were you diagnosed?"...hmmm maybe to personal?

"Hey I see you have a pump? My daughter is starting her pump next week?"

Ya, that's good!!

That may have worked... if I was not soooo hung over and looking like death.

As you arrived at your floor and the elevator doors closed I felt like I missed out on something?

But at least you made me smile and reminded me of my dear Cara.

Maybe next time Mr. Elevator Man!

Great story! I laugh because I'm constantly on the lookout for a diabetic. It would be nice to run into someone that "gets it!"

I love connecting with other T1's! I have actually said before...hey nice pump! :) And a girl came up to Adam once and asked about his pump and showed him hers (she was about 14).

I totally light up when I see something with a pump, which is actually not often at all. It's weird--that moment of connecting with someone on such a deep level...just because you see a glucose meter or a pump or something else diabetes-related.

Awesome! I loved this! It's true. We have some hound dog radar system built in. I see some tubing hanging from a pocket, hear a beep of a dexcom, or see some tape, and I feel like a kid on Christmas morning! Sometimes someone's phone will be on vibrate, but its just a false alarm.... We are all in this together!

I always feel the need to strike up a conversation with someone when I see they have a pump. I actually heard the familiar "beep" while at work the other day and followed it just to see if I could have that conversation! I never found where it came from. It was quite possible that the sound was just all in my head but who knows? lol
