Cara+Candy=Pumping Insulin

Today was a bad diabetes day.

Today diabetes kicked 5 year old Cara's ass because of a very bad 5 year old decision she made.

Today Cara decided to sneak God knows how many candies before she got up from bed this morning that she had hidden.

Yesterday was a different day,

Yesterday we were very proud of Cara.  She was the only one who came home from school with a bag full of Halloween candy from school.  I think she like the power this candy gave her over her siblings, she was in her glory. She was sharing it with the others without a fuss, they did have to do things for her BUT there was no fuss. lol   She was even asking us when she wanted a piece, we would count the carb and give her insulin.

Yesterday we thought that Halloween was going to be NO BIG DEAL this year!

NO BIG DEAL!!

So what the hell happened today?!?!

Maybe it was because it was early morning and she knew diabetes or not she would not be able to have candy?
Maybe it was because she thought, just a little won't hurt?
Maybe it was because her big sister who was sleeping in the bed above her and I'm sure sharing in this hidden stash of candy told her to?

OR maybe it was because she is 5 years old?

I don't know WHY but I do know what happened because of this decision.

*High blood sugar at breakfast, a 30.2 mmols (543.6) to be exact...BUSTED!!

*A breakfast bolus and correction of 5 units

*An afternoon of feeling low when she was in range or just a little higher

*An afternoon of crying and tantrums

*An afternoon of headaches and stomachaches

*And a long talk

Today we had "the talk"... a 5 year old version of "the talk".  She needed to understand that it should be NO BIG DEAL.  You can have candy, but when you eat candy you MUST tell us so we can give you insulin for the candy.

We needed to tell her that if she does not do the above that she could end up in the hospital very sick and not the FUN Diabetes Clinic part of the hospital BUT the stick an IV in your arm part of the hospital.

Today we needed to tell her we did not want her to be sick because of candy or because of diabetes.

We told her Candy + Cara = pumping insulin and to that she told us "OK, next time I will give myself 100 units of insulin when I eat candy...hahahahaha" with a great big smile on her face!!

Oh BOY...NO CARA! WE do your insulin not you!!

Happy Halloween EVERYONE!! I hope this is over fast!!

holy crap! I had to pull out the calculator to see what that was and I nearly spit my tea out!

Poor Cara. Poor Mom. I hope I don't have to have the talk anytime soon.

The talk is no fun. No fun at all. Let me know when this halloween thing is all over so I can stop plugging my ears while rocking in the corner. Hugs!!

Woah boy. Joe...when he was like 4 snuck a whole package of Starbursts...500s resulted. We had the talk. Luckily, no more sneaking since. It is hard. Love to you and Cara. xo

I know it's been kinda a disaster, but thank you for letting her eat candy in the first place!

Hopefully her knowing that you WILL let her have it, will make her try to sneak it less! :)

She's only five... I hate how diabetes steals the carefree part of their childhood; hate it especially around holidays.. Halloween, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is only natural that a child will test the limits and rebel. I am glad you helped her understand and happy that you will allow her to enjoy candy anyway, just with insulin. Not that simple though, I know. A piece of apple pie is 65 grams, on top of Thanksgiving dinner, it's so many carbs you are afraid to give such a large bolus sometimes. The younger the child, the harder this must be. I hope Cara feels better.

I hope she's feeling back on top of the world and ready for trick or treating!

These are hard lessons for our sweet babes to learn. You did well, Mama. Proud of you :)

OMG, totally all because shes 5! now shes fully aware that you cannot sneak candy as the BG doesnt lie. how sad, like the pp said, that carefree part of childhood is gone :(

we've had to have that talk...but with Isaac's older brother, reminding him that it is nice to share candy, however we just need to know so that Isaac gets insulin along with it. It is such a hard thing for our babes to get though...I'm shouting out with you about hoping this "holiday" (really it's a holiday?!) gets over faster than any other 24 hr event :)

Ahhh...because she is 5! and sometimes they just need to feel like they ARE IN CONTROL despite diabetes. We have had "the talk" more than once. Hoping it sinks in for good one day ;)

And my favorite line..."She was sharing it with the others without a fuss, they did have to do things for her BUT there was no fuss." That's hilarious!
